OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release February 2, 2007 Railsplitter Baseball Team Rolls Over USC-Aiken in Season Opener AIKEN, SC – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team successfully opened the 2007 season Friday afternoon despite cold weather and less than favorable conditions. The Railsplitters recorded a 10-0 shutout of the Pacers of the University of South Carolina-Aiken at Hernandez Stadium in Aiken, South Carolina to move to 1-0 on the year.
Playing in the first game of a three game series that will run into Sunday, the Railsplitters pounded out 14 hits on the afternoon while crossing the plate ten times and leaving seven runners stranded on base to pick up their first win of the year.
LMU newcomer TeWayne Willis (Hazard, KY) set the tone as the lead-off hitter. Willis finished the afternoon four for five at the plate while junior Derek Treece (Powell, TN) went three for five with two homeruns, a single and four RBI.
Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team selection Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) notched the win for Lincoln Memorial. Workman pitched the full nine innings, giving up six hits and no runs with five strikeouts and no walks.
The Railsplitters and the Pacers will square off in the second game of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in Aiken. -LMU- For additional
