Lincoln Memorial Sweeps Ohio Valley University

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Ohio Valley University on Sunday afternoon by defeating the Fighting Scots 7-1 and 12-5 to take all four games of the series.

After opening the weekend on Saturday with two impressive showings, the Railsplitters entered Sunday’s match-up with OVU smelling the kill.  Lincoln Memorial’s Casey Sedley (Miami, FL) came out strong and only allowed three hits over six innings while giving up one run, one earned run, one walk and recording eight strikeouts en route to his first win of the year.  Teammate Logan Brady (Morristown, TN) closed the door on OVU in the final inning allowing one walk.

At the plate, LMU’s Tommy Casto (Deerfield Beach, FL) and Derek Treece (Powell, TN) were both two for four at the plate, but it was Casto who recorded two RBI, as did senior Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK).  Teammates TeWayne Willis (Hazard, KY) and Bryon Izzo (Miramar, FL) were responsible for LMU’s other runs batted in.

In the second game of the afternoon, despite using four pitchers over seven innings of work, the Railsplitters again emerged victorious.  Scott Erland (Pegram, TN) got the start but came out in his first inning due to a problem with his pitching hand.  Erland gave up two hits, one run and one earned run while on the mound, but senior hurler Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI) came in to take over and cruised through the next five innings to grab the win, giving up only five hits and no damage with two walks and three strikeouts.

In the sixth inning, LMU’s Curtis Wills (Folsom, CA) entered the game and got a rude awakening by the Fighting Scots.  OVU managed three hits, two runs and two earned runs off of Wills in the sixth inning to make the score 11-3 LMU.  The Railsplitters came right back however in the top of the inning, scoring another run to push the score to 12-3.

Finally, in the top of the seventh inning, LMU senior Reed Neff (Brentwood, TN) who has been making a comeback after an injury in the off season took the mound.  Neff took a couple of lumps, as OVU picked up three hits two runs, and two earned runs, but held his composure and shut the door on the Fighting Scots while walking two batters and striking out three.

Derek Treece was a perfect three for three in the second game and accounted for two of LMU’s RBI on his fourth homerun of the year.  Also going out of the yard was senior right fielder Sergio Baez (Miami, FL) who notched his first and finished one for three at the plate.  Newcomer Tommy Casto finished game-two two for two at the dish while Dustin Rowland was two for three and Shane Kaufman (Miramar, FL) was a perfect two for two on the afternoon as well.

The Railsplitters will travel to Bristol, Tennessee Tuesday to take on King College in a double-header before returning home next weekend to host Tusculum College in their South Atlantic Conference opener.  Tuesday’s action with the Tornado of King College gets underway at noon, while next Saturday’s first game with Tusculum will start at 1:00 p.m.
