Railsplitters Take 2-0 Lead In Series With OVU

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team took the first two games of a four-game series with Ohio Valley University on Saturday afternoon by defeating the Fighting Scots 7-0 and 7-2 to move to 3-2 on the year.

The Railsplitters pounded out 11 hits, while crossing the plate seven times to tally a 7-0 win in the opening game of the series.  Senior hurler Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) picked up the complete game shutout, improving his record this year to 2-0 this year with no runs against him.  Workman allowed only three Fighting Scot hits, while giving up no damage, with one walk and four strikeouts.

LMU third baseman Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) turned in the strongest performance offensively by going three for four at the plate with one RBI and a double.  Sophomore leftfielder Bryon Izzo (Miramar, FL) finished the afternoon two for three at the dish with an RBI and a triple.

In game two the Railsplitters posted a late offensive barrage by scoring four runs in the sixth inning to shut the door on OVU in a 7-2 decision.  The Railsplitters recorded nine hits in their third win of the year and were led at the plate by Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK) and Derek Treece (Powell, TN) who were both two for four at the plate.  Railsplitter newcomer Tommy Casto (Deerfield Beach, FL) was responsible for two of the RBI in the game, while teammates TeWayne Willis (Hazard, KY) Bryon Izzo, Sergio Baez (Miami, FL) and Mickey Apple (Virginia Beach, VA) picked up the remaining runs batted in.

LMU senior Zach Gray (Columbia, TN) went the distance to grab his first win of the year in game-two.  Gray pitched seven innings of work, allowing three hits, two runs and one earned run while walking one batter and striking out four.

On Sunday afternoon the Railsplitters and the Fighting Scots will play the final two games of the four-game series.  First pitch of the double-header is set to be thrown at noon Eastern Time.
