Sports Release February 14, 2008 Railsplitters Pound Out Two Wins Over Kentucky State
HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team improved to 7-4 on the year Thursday afternoon with a 27-0 and 14-4 wins over the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University.
Although the opening game of the double-header only went five innings, Lincoln Memorial put on a hitting exhibition that included 16 hits for a total of 27 runs en route to LMU’s sixth win of the year. Railsplitter freshman Chris Telinda (Hamilton, OH) led by example by going a perfect 4-4 at the plate with four RBI.
On the mound in game one, the Railsplitters used two pitcher with Scott Erland (Pegram, TN) getting the start and picking up the win. Erland struck out the first six Kentucky State batters before giving way to Logan Brady (Morristown, TN). Brady was equally as impressive, pitching the final three innings and allowing no runs and no hits with only one walk and five strikeouts.
In the second game of the afternoon, Lincoln Memorial again hit the ball well and took a commanding 8-0 lead by the bottom of the third inning. To the Thorobred’s credit, KSU quickly got back in the game in the top of the fourth when catcher Kris Rush went out of the yard on a grand slam to make the score 7-4.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Railsplitters got the bats going again and eventually pounded out 14 hits for the second game to come away with the 14-4 victory. This time it was left fielder Ralph Rosas (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) that carried the torch, hitting a perfect 3-3 with three RBI and his second homerun of the year. LMU first baseman Eric Kitts (Blaine, TN) also recorded three runs batted in and went 2-3 at the plate, hitting his third ball out of the yard this year.
Thursday’s second win went to Railsplitter freshman Cody Pack (Andersonville, TN). Pack has two innings of work, allowing only one hit and no damage with three strikeouts. Teammate Shane Kaufman (Miramar, FL) went the next 1.2 innings work. Kaufman gave up two hits, three runs and three earned runs while walking three batters and striking out three. Freshman Devin Karlsen (Kitchener, Ontario) finally closed the door by going the final inning and a third. Karlsen allowed one hit, one run and one earned run with one walk and one strikeout.
Sporting a great deal of confidence from Thursday’s wins, the Railsplitters are now set to host Carson-Newman College in the South Atlantic Conference opener on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Railsplitter and the Eagles will play a single nine inning game on the Hennon Field under the lights to begin the league schedule. -LMU- For additional
