OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release April 5, 2006 Railsplitters Win Pitchers Duel with Eagles HARROGATE, TN – With all runs by both teams scored in the first inning, Wednesday night’s match-up between Lincoln Memorial and Carson-Newman was over and done in an incredible two hours and two minutes with the Railsplitters capturing a 4-1 win. The Eagles drew first blood in the first of two meetings this season between the two future South Atlantic Conference opponents. In the top of the first inning, Carson-Newman’s Brandon Burchfield scored on a Derrick Calkin single to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Railsplitters came storming back when Eagles starting pitcher Brett Hontz (2-2) seemed to come unglued by allowing only one hit, but walking three Railsplitter batters, which eventually turned into four earned runs on an RBI single by LMU’s Derek Treece (Powell, TN). Following the first inning of play, the game became a defensive struggle for both teams and for the most part a pitcher’s dual which LMU’s Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) ultimately won. Workman weathered several Carson-Newman storms and went the full nine innings, scattering seven hits and only one run, while walking three batters and striking out two to improve to 7-3 on the year. Now 22-14 overall, the Railsplitters will travel to Milligan, Tennessee Thursday evening for another single nine inning game with non-conference opponent Milligan College at 5:00 p.m. This weekend the Railsplitters return to Gulf South Conference action when they travel south to Florence, Alabama to take on the University of North Alabama in a three-game series.-LMU- For additional
