Railsplitters' Run at the GSC Tournament Falls Short

MONTEVALLO, AL – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team made a strong run at making the 2006 Gulf South Conference Tournament but in the end it wasn’t meant to be, as the #10 nationally ranked Falcons of the University of Montevallo dashed the Railsplitters' hope in Sunday’s final game of the series.

After splitting with Montevallo on Saturday by winning game-one 7-2 and losing game-two 6-1, the Railsplitters needed the University of West Florida to lose to Valdosta State on Sunday and LMU needed to take its final game with Montevallo on Sunday.  Part of that scenario went as planned, as West Florida was defeated 4-0 by Valdosta State.  Montevallo however, held off a late inning charge by LMU to take the final game of the series 6-5, thus denying the Railsplitters their first GSC Tournament appearance since 1998.

Ironically, Lincoln Memorial’s loss was West Florida’s gain.  Despite having been beaten by the Railsplitters two of three games in last weekend’s conference series and being defeated by Valdosta State University on Sunday, the Argonauts secure the #4 seed from the GSC Eastern Division for next weekend’s conference tournament in Millington, Tennessee via a higher winning percentage then Lincoln Memorial in league play.

The Railsplitters end the year with a 28-25 overall record and a 10-11 conference mark.  LMU Head Coach Jeff Sziksai and his team accumulated 12 more wins overall then a year ago, six more conference wins and gave the Lincoln Memorial University baseball program its first shot at a conference tournament berth since the 2002 season.

Although the competition is now over for the Railsplitters, the LMU coaching staff will continue its press to find the missing pieces for next year’s squad that will be competing for the first time as a member of the South Atlantic Conference.  For Railsplitter fans, it should be safe to assume that Lincoln Memorial University baseball is back!
