Eagles Get Revenge Against The Railsplitters

JEFFERSON CITY, TN – In the final non-conference game of the season, the Eagles of Carson-Newman College avenged their 4-1 loss on April 5, to Lincoln Memorial by defeating the Railsplitters Thursday afternoon 14-2.

Yesterday’s loss to Carson-Newman was the third consecutive loss for the Railsplitters and their second non-conference loss in as many days to a South Atlantic Conference foe.

While pitching continued to be an issue for Lincoln Memorial, it could be that the Railsplitters were looking ahead to this weekend’s series with the University of Montevallo.

The Railsplitter baseball team hasn’t had a legitimate chance of earning a Gulf South Conference Tournament berth since 2002 and hasn’t been to the post season affair since 1998.  This weekend’s series with the Falcons will dictate if the Railsplitters will make the trip to Millington, Tennessee next week.

Tournament or not, the Eagles took no pity on Lincoln Memorial Thursday afternoon, holding the Railsplitters to only seven hits.  LMU shortstop Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) was responsible for three of those, going three for four at the plate with one RBI.  Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK), Hunter Pelt (Coppell, TX) and Josh Burns (Harrogate, TN) picked up the Railsplitters other LMU base-knocks.

On the mound, LMU did everything possible to keep from throwing one of the weekend starters.  Freshman Sean Mace (Florence, KY) got the start but received a rude greeting from the Eagles.  Mace tossed six innings, giving up 10 hits, 10 runs and seven earned runs, while walking four batters and striking out one.

The final two innings of the contest saw Josh Amix (Harrogate, TN) and Sergio Baez (Miami, FL) on the mound for Lincoln Memorial.  Amix went one inning of work, allowing one hit, four runs and four earned runs, with three walks, while Baez gave up only one hit and a walk.

While the non-conference losses this week don’t mean a great deal in regard to what the Railsplitters are trying to accomplish in terms of the GSC Tournament, now the stakes have been raised and push will come to shove when LMU meets Montevallo this weekend.  The Railsplitters need to win two games against the Falcons to stay in control of their own destiny and to extend play into the post-season.
