It’s Now Do or Die for Railsplitters

HARROGATE, TN – Sunday’s 6-3 loss to West Florida in the final game of a three-game series forces the Railsplitters' hand next weekend in their regular season finale with the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Alabama.

After coming away with 5-4 and 2-1 victories on Saturday, the Argonauts held off Lincoln Memorial in the final game to split the series with LMU taking the 2-1 win.  Still, the series win wasn’t enough to guarantee the Railsplitters a spot in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament, and now they must take at least one game from UM next weekend to have a chance at getting in to the post season affair for the first time since 1998.

Unfortunately, Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI) got the loss for on Sunday.  Wakefield falls to 4-3 on the year after giving up eight hits over two innings, five runs and five earned runs, with one walk and one strikeout.

Senior Mitchell Turner (Knoxville, TN), who was pitching in his final home game for the Railsplitters, then pitched the final seven innings of work, allowing only four additional West Florida hits, one run and one earned run with one walk and four strikeouts.

While it was Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK) that had the best day at the plate (2-3), it was senior Hunter Pelt (Coppell, TX) and junior Sergio Baez (Miami, FL) that were responsible for all three of LMU’s RBI.  Pelt went the other way to go out of the yard in his first appearance of the day, while Baez hit a two RBI smash over the left centerfield fence in the fourth inning.

At 27-21 on the year and 9-9 in league play, one word best describes next weekend’s series with Montevallo, “monumental.”  Before the Railsplitters can take care of that business however, there are a couple of non-conference matters that may be a little undesirable this week to attend to.  LMU must travel to Carson-Newman and Tusculum this week before they can focus on their road series next weekend with the Falcons.  And, LMU already short staffed in the pitching category, this week’s mid-week games could make things very interesting.
