OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release April 22, 2006 Final Game with UWF Could Mean More Than Series Sweep HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial baseball team swept a double-header from the University of West Florida on Saturday afternoon to have a chance to sweep a conference team for the third time this season and to keep Gulf South Conference Tournament hopes alive. Although Saturday’s first two games were pushed back from a 1:00 o’clock start to 4:00 p.m. due to field conditions following two days of heavy rain throughout the tri-state area, the Railsplitters set the tone of the series early when shortstop Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) led the day off with a his third homerun of the season over the left field fence. Junior hurler Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) then went the distance to give the Railsplitters the 5-4 win. In the afternoon’s second game, Railsplitter pitcher Zach Gray (Columbia, TN) won a pitcher’s duel, giving up only four hits over seven innings to come away with a 2-1 victory and to give LMU the opportunity for a series sweep in Sunday’s final game. Focus will be the issue for Lincoln Memorial on Sunday. LMU hasn’t earned a trip to the league tournament since 1998 when Tony Skole, now the Head Coach at East Tennessee State University was at the helm of the Railsplitter program. Without a win in game-three, the Railsplitters could again be denied a trip to this year’s league tournament in Millington, Tennessee so Head Coach Jeff Sziksai will be trying to trying to keep his team’s mind off what could be and on what has to be done. The final game against the Argonauts will also prove to be monumental as the Railsplitters will be forced to close out the conference schedule next weekend on the road against #12 nationally ranked Montevallo. Lincoln Memorial and West Florida get underway Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on the Lamar Hennon Field. -LMU- For additional
