Late Railsplitter Rally Not Enough against UAH

HARROGATE, TN Sunday’s late inning rally by Lincoln Memorial wasn’t enough for the Railsplitters to take game three from the University of Alabama-Huntsville and emerge from with series with a best two out of three split.

The chargers jumped on the Railsplitters early in the game and never looked back, scoring runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings to come away with a 12-6 victory in the final game of the series.  UAH won the first game of Saturday’s double-header 8-6, while the Railsplitters took game-two 1-0.

Despite rolling up 17 hits Sunday afternoon, Lincoln Memorial left 15 base runners stranded, only crossing the plate six times in the loss.  Junior Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK) was three for four on the day, while teammates Derek Treece (Powell, TN) and Sergio Baez (Miami, FL) were each three for five and combined for three RBI, with Treece picking up his fifth homerun of the year.  Teammate Hunter Pelt (Coppell, TX) also recorded three hits on the afternoon in six at bats.

From a pitching standpoint, it seemed as though LMU used nearly everyone on staff.  Although he was fighting pain from an ankle injury sustained earlier this week, Zach Gray (Columbia, TN) made the start and eventually got the loss, as he lasted 4.1 innings of work before giving up the mound to teammate Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI).  Gray gave up six hits, eight runs and only four earned runs, while walking three batters and striking out three.

With one out in the fifth inning, reliever Kyle Wakefield who pitched in yesterday’s second game, took the mound and allowed one hit, with no runs, a walk and a strikeout, before giving the duties to Sean Mace (Florence, KY) for the next two innings.  Mace got a rude welcome from the Chargers, giving up four hits, four runs and two earned runs, with two walks and one strikeout.

Finally, in the top of the ninth, Sergio Baez came in from centerfield to finish things on the mound for Lincoln Memorial.  Baez retired the side and got LMU back to the plate but the damage was too much to overcome.  A Railsplitter run in the bottom of the seventh and three in the bottom of the eighth weren’t enough and LMU’s GSC record dropped to 5-4 with the loss.

Still very much in the conference tournament bid race, the Railsplitters will have to play non-conference opponents Carson-Newman and Milligan this week before they can attempt to get back on the winning track in league play next weekend in Florence, Alabama against University of North Alabama.  Wednesday’s home game with the Eagles of Carson-Newman is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start, while Thursday’s road game with Milligan will also get underway at 6:00 p.m. in Milligan.
