LMU & UAH Will Play Rubber Match

HARROGATE, TN – After losing to UAH 8-6 in the first game of Saturday’s double-header, the Railsplitters bounced back in game-two to notch a close 1-0 win over the Chargers to set Sunday’s final game as the deciding factor of who will take the regular season series.

LMU’s Reed Neff (Brentwood, TN) got the loss on Saturday.  Neff who falls to 7-3 overall, pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits and eight runs which were all earned, while walking two Charger batters and striking out three.  Teammate Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI) who is projected as the starting pitcher in Sunday’s final game pitched the final two innings for Lincoln Memorial.  Wakefield cruised through both innings, giving up only one hit and no damage with a strikeout.

Although LMU got the loss, Railsplitter highlights at the plate in the first game included junior Joe Workman’s (Dayton, KY) triple and freshman Bryon Izzo’s (Miramar, FL) fourth homerun of the season.

Game-two turned out to be a pitcher’s dual between Workman of Lincoln Memorial (6-3) and UAH pitcher Tom Longyear (0-4).  Workman pitched the full seven inning shutout of the Chargers, allowing only four hits, three walks and recording six strikeouts.  Longyear was almost as impressive, giving up five Railsplitter hits, one run and one earned run with four walks and four strikeouts.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning when LMU’s Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK) singled through the left side to score teammate Derek Treece (Powell, TN).  Rowland was 1-1 at the plate with a walk and the game-winning RBI.

Sunday’s final game between the Railsplitters and the Chargers not only signifies who will win the series, it will also mark the final time that Lincoln Memorial and the University of Alabama-Huntsville will compete against each other in regular season play as Gulf South Conference opponents. Sunday’s action gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
