OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release March 29, 2006 Bulldogs Bite Railsplitters ATHENS, TN – Wednesday afternoon’s baseball game between the Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan College and Lincoln Memorial got ugly in late innings for the Railsplitters. After LMU tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh by scoring three runs, Tennessee Wesleyan came back in the bottom of the inning to score two runs, taking a 7-5 lead, and then shut the door on the Railsplitters in the bottom of the eighth by tacking on another four runs to come away with an 11-5 win. With a big conference weekend coming up against the University of Alabama-Huntsville, the already short staffed Railsplitters were forced to throw three pitchers in Wednesday’s outing against the Bulldogs. Junior Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI) who will most certainly be in the lineup this weekend got the start against TWC, pitching the first four innings of work, while giving up eight hits, four runs and four earned runs and fanning three Bulldog batters. In the fifth inning, freshman Sean Mace (Florence, KY) entered the game but lasted only 2.1 innings, allowing four hits, three runs and two earned runs with two walks. Following Mace’s departure, LMU’s Mitchell Turner (Knoxville, TN) took the mound. Turner pitched the final 1.2 innings but was given a rude awakening by Bulldogs, being saddled with four more hits, four runs and four earned runs, with three walks and one strikeout. Mace eventually got the loss for LMU, falling to 0-2 on the year. At the plate, catcher Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK) who leads the team in hitting with a .409 batting average had the best performance for Lincoln Memorial. Rowland was three for four at the plate with one RBI and a run scored. Teammate Wes Thompson (Cumberland Gap, TN) wasn’t far off that mark. The senior was two for four on the day with two runs scored and one run batted in. This weekend’s series with Alabama-Huntsville, while always crucial, could be extremely interesting as well. LMU second baseman Hunter Pelt (Coppell, TX) has been under the weather this week and is questionable to play, while injuries to several Railsplitter squad members could play a deciding role in the outcome of the Gulf South Conference match-up. First pitch of Saturday’s double-header with UAH is set for 1:00 p.m. on the Lamar Hennon Field.-LMU- For additional
