Treece’s Walk-off Homerun Salvages Split For LMU

HARROGATE, TN – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team got a walk-off homerun from sophomore Derek Treece (Powell, TN) in extra innings of Thursday’s second game with Mars Hill College to salvage a split with the Lions after losing the first game of the afternoon 5-2.

Treece’s homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning of a seven inning game allowed the Railsplitters to take a 4-3 win and improve their overall record to 19-9 this season.

A poor showing at the plate and too many hits by the Lions were the major contributing factors to the Railsplitters falling in the first game of the afternoon.  Mars Hill’s Matt Russell and David DeSilva led offensive attack with Russell going four for four in game-one with an RBI and DeSilva going three for four with two runs batted in.

The Lions' Adam Atkinson got the win, pitching five innings, giving up seven hits, two runs and two earned runs with a walk and four strikeouts.  Teammate Charlie Harrison closed the deal over the final two innings.  Harrison gave up no hits and no damage with three strikeouts.

With only seven hits in game one, no particular Railsplitter player had a great game at the plate however; junior Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) did finish two for four, while senior pitcher Mitchell Turner (Knoxville, TN) got the loss.  Turner entered the game in the fifth inning in relief for Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI) who pitched the first four for LMU, giving up five hits and recording three strikeouts.  Turner gave up a total of five runs over the final three innings, all of which were earned while recording five strikeouts.

In game two, Bryan Izzo (Miramar, FL) who hit his third homerun of the year in game-one continued to see the ball well, going three for four at the plate to carry the majority of the LMU offense, but it was Treece who bailed the Railsplitters out of a game in which momentum had switched toward Mars Hill.

Following two innings by Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) and four innings by Sean Mace (Florence, KY), Reed Neff (Brentwood, TN) pitched the final two of the game to grab his sixth win of the year.  Neff gave up only one hit and a walk with one strikeout before Treece ended the game in the bottom of the eighth.

Ranked #23 in the country, 19-9 overall and 3-0 in the GSC, LMU will have to turn it up a notch this weekend when they travel to Carrollton, Georgia to take on the University of West Georgia.  The Braves were swept last weekend by North Alabama in conference play and will be looking to get back on the winning track when they play their league home opener this weekend in Carrollton.
