OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release March 18, 2006 Is LMU Baseball Back? HARROGATE, TN – It was only the first conference series of the season, but the Lincoln Memorial baseball team looked impressive Saturday afternoon by sweeping the first two games of a three-game series with visiting Valdosta State University 10-0 and 7-4. The Railsplitters came out on fire in the first game of the afternoon, scoring 10 runs and pounding out 12 hits with only one fielding error, while junior pitcher Joe Workman (5-2 Dayton, KY) got help from his fielding unit to record the two hit 10-0 shutout. LMU pitcher Zach Gray (5-2 Columbia, TN) also went the distance to grant the Railsplitters the come-from-behind win over the Blazers. Gray and his teammates held VSU to only seven hits and four runs, only two of which were earned to pick up the 7-4 win. The conference wins mark the first time the Lincoln Memorial baseball team has put together back-to-back conference victories since March 25th and 26th of 2005 when the Railsplitters won the final two games of the series against West Georgia to take the two of three split. According to available records, LMU hasn’t swept a series nor taken a two of three split with Valdosta State University since the 1998 season when the Railsplitters were under the direction of former LMU Head Coach and current East Tennessee State University skipper Tony Skole. Sunday’s final game of the series between LMU and Valdosta State could set the tone for what will be the Railsplitter’s farewell tour of the Gulf South Conference as they will compete next year in the South Atlantic Conference. Sunday’s nine inning game between the Blazers and the Railsplitters gets underway at 1:00 p.m. on the Lamar Hennon Field.
