OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release March 15, 2006 Railsplitters Fall to Pioneers 4-1 HARROGATE, TN – The Pioneers of Tusculum College handed the Railsplitter baseball team their first loss in the past five outings Wednesday afternoon, snapping a four game LMU win streak dating back to LMU’s March 9 bout with St. Augustine College. The Pioneers scored runs in the first, fourth, seventh and eighth innings to defeat Lincoln Memorial 4-1 in the first of two meetings that will take place this season in Harrogate and Greeneville. LMU’s only run came in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 1-1 when (Hunter Pelt (Coppell, TX) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score teammate Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN). Richardson was responsible for one of only three hits on the afternoon by the Railsplitter hitters. While LMU junior Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) got the start, his time on the mound was limited with the conference opener slated for this Saturday against Valdosta State. Workman pitched two innings, giving up two hits, one run and one earned run, while walking one batter and striking out three. In the third inning, freshman Sean Mace (Florence, KY) took over and eventually picked up his first loss, falling to 0-1 on the year. Mace went five innings of work, allowing three hits, two runs and two earned runs, while walking three batters. In the eighth inning, Mitchell Turner (Knoxville, TN) took over on the mound but couldn’t bring Lincoln Memorial back. Turner tossed the final two innings giving up two hits, one run and one earned run with a walk and a strikeout. The Pioneers' Bobby Darling (4-2) got the win while teammate and fellow pitcher Brandon Dickson picked up the save. Darling pitched the first 6.1 innings of work, allowing only three hits, one run and one earned run, while walking four LMU batters and striking out three. Dickson went remainder of the game, giving up no further damage and holding LMU hitless over the final 2.2 innings while recording a walk and a strikeout. This weekend’s series with Valdosta State University is set for one nine and one seven inning game on Saturday that will get underway at 1:00 p.m. on the Lamar Hennon Field. Sunday’s single nine inning series finale will also start at 1:00 o’clock.
