OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release March 1, 2006 Railsplitters Take One From Cobras HARROGATE - The Lincoln Memorial University Baseball team split a doubleheader with Virginia Intermont College on the Lamar Hennon Field in Harrogate on Wednesday. LMU took game one by a final score of 13-2, while falling in the second game by the score of 11-5. Game one saw a back and forth contest through five and a half innings, with LMU leading 3-2 after scoring single runs in the first, second, and fourth innings, with VIC responding with runs in the second and fifth. The bottom of the sixth saw LMU’s offense come alive for ten runs, highlighted by homeruns by juniors Sergio Baez (Miami, FL), and Nate Henderson (Loudon, TN). Lincoln Memorial was led on offense by Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN), with a 4-4 day at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Also contributing were Henderson, who went 2-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, and junior Dustin Rowland (Eagle River, AK), who finished 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Picking up the win for the Railsplitters was junior Zach Gray (Columbia, TN), who went five innings, giving up six hits and two runs, while striking out five. Gray improved to 3-2 on the year. Senior Mitchell Turner (Knoxville, TN) pitched a scoreless sixth to pick up his second save of the season. Game two saw a reverse of game one, as LMU, leading 5-2 after five innings, gave up nine runs over the final two frames. The Cobras were helped by four Railsplitter errors. The VIC offensive explosion was highlighted by a three run homerun by Josh Self in the sixth. The Railsplitters were led at the plate by Richardson again, who finished game two 2-3 at the plate, with a stolen base, one run scored, and an RBI. LMU junior Reed Neff (Brentwood, TN) picked up the loss, dropping to 3-2 on the season. Turner and freshman Sean Mace (Florence, KY), came on to finish the game for the Splitters. The Railsplitters leave the friendly confines of the Lamar Hennon Field as they travel to Lander, SC to take part in the Batter’s Box Classic this weekend. After today’s doubleheader, LMU’s record stands at 11-7 on the season.
