OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release February 24, 2006 Railsplitters Win First Two Games against WVT HARROGATE, TN – The Railsplitter baseball team showed a lot of confidence and experience in Friday afternoon’s double-header sweep of visiting West Virginia Tech in the first two games of a four game series scheduled for the weekend. The Railsplitters rolled up a 10-0 win over seven innings in the first game behind 10 hits and no errors log the first win of the weekend. Senior Wes Thompson (Cumberland Gap, TN) was a perfect two for two at the plate with a homerun and five RBI to lead the Railsplitters. On the mound, LMU newcomer Zach Gray (Columbia, TN) evened his record at 2-2 on the year by going the distance against WVT. Gray pitched seven innings, giving up only four hits and no runs, while walking one batter and striking out nine. In the second game, it was Reed Neff (Brentwood, TN) that recorded the win for the Railsplitters. Neff went 6.0 innings of work, allowing six hits, five runs and four earned runs, while walking five batters and striking out four. While it was LMU catcher Dustin Rowland (Fairbanks, AK) that was responsible for the most RBI in the second game (3), Railsplitter sophomore third baseman Derek Treece (Powell, TN) was a perfect four for four at the plate with one RBI to have the best hitting performance. Now 8-6 on the year, the LMU baseball team and West Virginia Tech will square off in the final two games of the four-game series Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. on the Lamar Hennon Field. The two games will be only a third of the action going on Saturday on the LMU campus, as the LMU softball team will host a double-header against Brevard College at 1:00 p.m. and the LMU men’s and women’s basketball teams will play their final games of the season Saturday evening when they play host to the University of West Georgia at 6:00 and 8:00 o’clock in the Tex Turner Arena.
