Baseball Splits Double-Header with North Greenville

TIGERVILLE, SC – The Railsplitter baseball team moved to 6-6 on the year with a split Tuesday afternoon in Tigerville, South Carolina against North Greenville University.

LMU won the first game Tuesday afternoon 7-3 on the arm of junior Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI) who improves to 1-0 this season.  Wakefield went the full nine innings, giving up six hits, three runs and three earned runs, while walking four batters and striking out seven.

While the Railsplitters came away with the win, no unparticular player had an exceptional day at the plate.  Lincoln Memorial mustered only six hits in the first game of the afternoon, but capitalized on four North Greenville errors to come away with the 7-3 victory.

The afternoon’s second game wasn’t as appealing for Railsplitter fans.  LMU was shutout for only the second time this season, losing 5-0 to NGU.  Junior pitcher Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) picked up the loss.  Workman who was coming off of LMU biggest win in recent memory by beating Florida Southern on Friday pitched six innings, giving up five hits, five runs and four earned runs, while walking one batter and striking out eight.

Again, hitting proved to be one of the contributing factors in the Railsplitter’s demise, as LMU managed only one base knock in the second game and allowed NGU to produce five.  Also, two Railsplitter errors didn’t help matters as the loss dropped the LMU boys of the diamond back to the .500 mark.

The Railsplitters' next outings will be this Friday and Saturday when LMU plays host to West Virginia Tech at home on the Lamar Hennon Field.  The series was supposed to have been played on Saturday and Sunday but was moved up due to inclement weather that has been forecast this weekend for the tri-state area.

WVU-Tech will be playing their season-opener, as their Wednesday games against Mars Hill College were postponed due to weather.  Friday’s action will consist of two seven inning games that will get underway at 2:30 p.m.
