OFFICE OF SPORTS INFORMATION Sports Release February 10, 2006 LMU & OVU Split Double-Header HARROGATE, TN – Early Thursday morning, Lincoln Memorial University baseball coach Jeff Sziksai made the decision to move up this weekend’s series with Ohio Valley University in an effort to get as much of the three-game set in before inclement weather rolled through the tri-state area. The series was originally scheduled for two seven inning games on Saturday and one nine inning game on Sunday. However, after talking things over with officials at Ohio Valley University, the two clubs agreed to move the double-header to Friday and then adopt a “wait and see” type attitude for the remainder of the weekend. That being said, the two teams squared off Friday, OVU taking game one 12-8 and LMU winning the second game under the lights by the final of 16-1. Despite taking a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning in the day’s first game, the Railsplitters suffered their second loss of the year, losing to the Fighting Scots 12-8. LMU junior Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) got the loss falling to 1-1 on the year and going only 2.2 innings before getting the hook. In the second game of the afternoon, the Railsplitters seemed to be solid both at the plate and from the mound. Junior Zach Gray (Columbia, TN) recorded his first win of the year by going six of the seven innings played. Gray gave up only three hits, one run and one earned run, while walking three batters and striking out eight. At the plate, Lincoln Memorial belted 14 hits and crossed the plate 16 times as they were led by junior Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) who was three for five at the plate. LMU senior Hunter Pelt (Coppell, TX) was only one for four in the second game but was responsible for four RBI and notched his first homerun of the year. Moving their record to 3-2 on the year following Friday’s double-header with the Fighting Scots, the Railsplitters may have played their last game against Ohio Valley University this weekend. Old man winter has decided he wants to stay in the tri-state area a little longer and is said to be bringing large amounts of snow with over the next few days. If the area forecast holds true over the next 24 hours, there won’t be any baseball played on the Lamar Hennon Field for quite some time.
