Railsplitters Hold Off #8 Ranked USC-Aiken in Season Opener 

AIKEN, SC – The Lincoln Memorial University baseball team kicked off the 2006 season Friday evening with a 9-8 win over the 8th ranked Pacers of the University of South Carolina-Aiken.

Railsplitter junior hurler Joe Workman (Dayton, KY) picked up the win by tossing six innings of work, while giving up nine hits, six runs, six earned runs, walking four batters and striking out six.  Newcomer Kyle Wakefield (Kalamazoo, MI) recorded the save.  Wakefield shut the door on USCA, pitching the final three innings, giving up two hits, two runs and one earned run while walking one batter and striking out three.

At the plate LMU senior Wes Thompson (Cumberland Gap, TN) finished the evening two for three at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI.  Junior Dustin Roland (Eagle River, AK) was three for five at the dish with two RBI, while teammate Bryon Izzo (Miramar, FL) was two for five with two runs batted in. 

The remainder of LMU’s offense came from sophomore Derek Treece (Powell, TN) who was two for four with one RBI, Hunter Pelt (Coppell, TX) who struggled on one for four hitting with one run batted in and Mike Richardson (Murfreesboro, TN) who was two for five with two runs knocked in.

Game one of the three-game set now behind them and the season-opener in the books, the Railsplitters will focus on taking at least the better half of the series on Saturday when they square off against the Pacers in the weekend’s second game.  Both Saturday and Sunday’s action are set to get underway at 1:00 p.m. in Aiken, South Carolina.
