'SPLITTERS BEAT SUE BENNETT TEAM
-------------------------------
Harrogate, Tenn. -- Although outweighed
fifteen pounds per man and outclassed in experience a plucky, hard-fighting,
brainy blue-clad Railsplitter team literally swamped the Sue Bennett Memorial
football team here yesterday to the tune of 45 to 7. The visitors were
outclassed in every phase of the game and their heavy line opened like a paper
wall for the fast charging Railsplitters. The five Seniors who are playing their
second year for the local boys certainly gave a creditable account of
themselves. Sharpe, guard, Via, tackle, Fulkerson, end, Shields, halfback and
Gregg, guard, played ball as it should be played.
Sue Bennett received the kickoff on their fifteen yard
line and ran it back to their twenty yard line when downed. Mullins gained three
yards at right tackle. On the second play Cunningham fumbled and recovered the
ball for a loss of nine yards. A third attempt at the line netted Sue Bennett
one yard. L.M.U. was offside. Mullins faked to Cunningham and went off right
tackle for a gain of ten yards and Galloway punted to Jones on his forty yard
line. Jones carried the ball on a spinner thru center for four yards. Jones
attempted a pass to Shields which was incomplete. Hathaway hot the line at guard
for no gain. L.M.U. penalized for offside. Jones punted out of bounds on Sue
Bennett's four yard line.
Galloway made nine yards off right tackle. Galloway hit
the line for a gain of three yards and a first down. Mullins fumbled but
recovered the ball for a loss of six yards. Galloway goes for three yards off
right tackle. Davis passed to Mullins for one yard. Galloway punted to Jones on
his 43 yard line. Jones returns the ball to Sue Bennett's 34 yard line. Hathaway
gains nine yards on a deceptive play. A series of line plunges and the ball
belongs to L.M.U. on the opponents' 5 yard line. Hathaway reels off a deceptive
run through the line for a touchdown. Jones, the coolest, cleverest and most
deceptive of the Alexander-coached protégés, kicked the goal. Score: L.M.U. 7;
S.B.C. 0.
In the second quarter the Railsplitters got their
bearings and used every type of deception known to the sport and literally
knocked the hat off the visitors to score 19 points. Jones scoring one touchdown
and Ross and Shields each adding one to make eighteen points while Jones made
one extra point. Score at the half: L.M.U. 26; S.B.C. 0.
At the half the wily Swede must have given his protégés
another dose of scoring syrup as they came back in the third quarter and scored
three touchdowns within ten minutes. Jones taking a pass from Hathaway for one
touchdown and running back a punt for sixty yards for the other. In this play
each member of the Railsplitters' squad executed a perfect block to open the way
for the perfect execution of the run back. Jones scored the extra point. Shields
received a pass from the blonde marvel from Elizabethton to a net gain of
fifty-five yards and the seventh touchdown of the game. A series of
substitutions weakened the Railsplitter attack and at the end of the quarter the
score was L.M.U. 45; S.B.C. 0.
In the last quarter the Sue Bennett lads fighting like
starved wolves marched the ball down the field on a series of off tackle plays
and forward passes to the Railsplitter five yard line where Mullins drove thru
the line for Sue Bennett's touchdown. He made the extra point. A renewed attack
on the part of the Railsplitters had the ball on the opponents' fifteen yard
line with a first down when the final gun sounded.
Sue Bennett had a hard fighting line and fast backs but
were weak on defense. The simply could not solve Old Alec's attack. It was a
case of fast deception against brawn.
