EAGLES BATTLE L.M.U. ELEVEN THIS SATURDAY
(In the Middlesboro Paper, article titled SPLITTERS AND EAGLES PREP)

Carson-Newman Team in good Shape After Tilt With Vols

-------------------------------

JEFFERSON CITY, Nov. 10 -- The fighting "Eagles" will play host to the Lincoln Memorial University "Railsplitters" here Saturday when the two teams meet for the first time in several years. [Ed. Note - Unless the two teams scrimmaged in the 1920's this was the first, and only, meeting to date.]
The Railsplitters have a conference victory to their credit and will come here fresh form a 13 to 8 victory over the Eastern Kentucky Teachers. the Eagles will be slight favorites to win, but anything may happen if the Railsplitters get their passing attack to functioning. L.M.U. completed 21 out of 35 passes in one of its recent games.
With one or two exceptions the Eagles came out of the scrap with the Vols in fair shape barring the usual number of bruises and charley horses. Saturday's game, however, may prove a costly venture for the Eagles as Clyde Childers, varsity fullback, received a severe shoulder injury in the second quarter and was unable to play the rest of the game. In early season practice Captain "Firpo" Smith broke his leg and Coach "Frosty" Holt was at loss as to where he might find a fullback. Fate was kind and Childers has developed  into one of the best backs the Eagles have had in years. Unless he is able to return to the lineup the Eagles will be sore handicapped in their remaining games.
The coaches were pleased with the showing of the Eagles against the Vols and only sent their gridsters through a light workout this afternoon. Tomorrow will see the Eagles hard at work again, getting ready to fly into the Railsplitters at full force when they clash next week-end

Injured Players Return At L.M.U. For Eagle Game
-------------------------------

(Knoxville Journal Special)

HARROGATE, Nov. 12. -- Realizing that they have a strong team to confront at Jefferson City Saturday, the L.M.U. Railsplitters have been working hard to perfect their running offense.
Johnson and Sharp have sufficiently recovered from injuries to take an active part in the workouts and will probably be back in their old positions Saturday, after being off for two weeks. Johnson, despite his size, is a crafty ball carrier and a good defensive man. His efforts have been a deciding factor in two of the Railsplitters' games. Sharp plays guard and is a power in the forward wall.
The offense seems to be much improved. It really began clicking true to form last week when the Railsplitters were able to make both of their victorious touchdowns against the Eastern Kentucky players by driving hard through the line. Both Hathaway and Erwin are showing up well as line plungers.
The Railsplitters' forward wall will consist of Fulkerson and Vaughn, ends; Via and Chambers, tackles; Gregg and Sharp, guards; and Norris at center. In the backfield Hathaway will play fullback; Erwin and Ross, halfbacks; and Jones, quarterback.

C.-N. EAGLES VICTORS OVER L.M.U.,
38 to 0

Shabel, Iddens and Cole Lead Carson-Newman To Victory

-------------------------------

JEFFERSON CITY, Nov. 14. -- Carson-Newman's Fighting Eagles snowed the L.M.U. Railsplitters under an avalanche of touchdowns here this afternoon and won 38 to 0.
Coach "Frosty" Holt used his reserves a greater part of the game and they showed up better than the regulars. [Ed. Note -- While this is probably true, LMU and Carson Newman were bitter rivals even this far back and Coach Holt never met a man he didn't like -- to run the score up on.] Ed Shablel, Iddins and Cole starred in the backfield for the Eagles while C. Roberts, Hendley and Childs were the best in the forward wall. Chambers was by far the outstanding performer for the Railsplitters, making over half of his team's tackles.
The Eagles got off to a good start when two long runs by Corban paved the way for the first touchdown, Shabel passing to Sewell for the extra point. The longest gain of the game was a pass, Childers to Wood, good for 50 yards, but the Eagles failed to convert the opportunity into a touchdown. They came back though and jimmy Iddins tallied in the second quarter, making the score 13 to 0 in favor of the Eagles at the end of the first half.

Eagles Win, 38 to 0, Over L.M.U.

Corban Stars as Entire Team Romps In Scoring Orgy

-------------------------------

Special To The News-Sentinel

JEFFERSON CITY -- The Carson-Newman Eagles had little trouble in defeating the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, 30-to-0, in an uninteresting and listless game here Saturday afternoon.
Led by Johnny Corban and Iddins, two backfield stars, the Eagles scored one touchdown in the first quarter, one each in the second and third and three in the final period. An outstanding feature of the game was a completed pass from Childers to Wood that netted 50 yards.
Corban scored two touchdowns, and Iddins, Hutchins, Clark, and Shabel accounted for one each. Chambers, tackle, played the best game for the losers.
