LMU PLAYS HOMECOMING GAME
HERE SAT.
-------------------------------

Smoky Mountain Title at Stake as
Great Teams Clash Here

-------------------------------

Middlesboro will have its first opportunity to see College Conference football Saturday when L.M.U. plays its Homecoming game here with East Tennessee State Teachers College at East End Park.
Both schools are the latest additions to the Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference, and both are making strong bids for the conference title this year. Both teams have clean slates for the season, and both are out to keep their slate clean.

Teachers Hard

Dean Bailey's ETSTC yearbook photo     To get a win over the Teachers, the Railsplitters will have to stop Williams, former Jonesboro star, and ace of the Teacher backs. He is a broken field runner without peer in the league, and a passer of no mean ability. Teaming with Williams is Dean Bailey [pictured at left], said to be the fastest man on two legs in the south. These two form a passing team that rivals in their potency the famous Hack and Mack of last season at U-T. Bailey is an end and receiver of the passes.

Leaves Air

Coach Alexander will leave the air and feature double reverse and spinner plays to gain the precious yardage. With Liebrock out of the backfield, Jones will probably get the call to lead the attack.
The Railsplitters showed their stuff when they defeated Tusculum last weekend, and sees visions of being hailed as conference title holders for the season. The Homecoming game will be witnessed by alumni from all around, and a big day will be made of it.

L.M.U. Outweighed

The Teachers average 188 pounds in the line, while the Railsplitters balance at 177. The Teachers will have a backfield heavier by 10 pounds per man than the L.M.U. outfit, and they are faster and more experienced.
Johnson and Shields, king-pins for the Railsplitters, while lacking in experience, have shown that they are powerful backs when it comes to playing the grid game. Johnson proved to all concerned that he can pass, run and kick in the game last week and both are consistent blockers and tacklers.

JONES THRILLS HOMECOMERS IN LOOP VICTORY

-------------------------------

Stocky Back Dazzles Opponents as
Railsplitters Crash Thru

-------------------------------

Lincoln Memorial University climaxed its Homecoming here Saturday afternoon in a very becoming manner when the Railsplitters took the East Tennessee Teachers to town to the tune of 20-0. This guy Jones was just woo much for the Pedagogues.
This marked the Railsplitters' second Conference win in as many starts, and they are making rapid strides to the top of the Smoky Mountain heap for the title. The Teachers came here highly touted, coached to win, and with an aggressive and fighting team.

'Dales Open

To start the fray off, a Teacher was tackled behind the line for a safety and two points. Then in the second frame, a pass from Jones to Vaughn netted 15 yards and a touchdown. Then in the fourth period, Jones ran wild. He trotted over from the 15 yard line for a marker, and then again he thrilled the packed stands with a beautiful 80-yard run behind interference forming along the way for a touchdown after receiving a punt.
It was Jones' day, but others aided and abetted the work. Liebrock was there when necessary. Johnson had a habit of plowing gains via the line. Shields, reported injured and unable to play, wrought havoc to the Tutors. If Shields was injured Saturday, he should be good when he is really able to play.

Take to Air

Robert "Baldy" Jones -- LMU Quarterback     After playing straight football the first half, L.M.U. took to the air in the second. Passes heaved by Jones, every one a perfect pass to the point, were received by Glenn Fulkerson, lanky end, and Liebrock, Johnson and Vaughn. The Teachers did not have a defense to cope with the dazzling aerial attack.
That boy Jones is a wonder. Yale may have Albie Booth, Georgia it's "Jack the Ripper," but the Airedales have Bobby Jones [pictured at left], equal to the famous Hack and Mack of their sister institution. His run will be the talk of the town for days, the way he weaved around amongst Gold jerseys until his interference formed, and then chased right to the goal line 80 yards away -- it was a sight.

Fighting Spirit

Coach Alexander's work on the L.M.U. team is very much in evidence. A spirit to go, a never-say-die spirit is evident from the way the Blue and Gray drives through. With such a team, coach strategy is not needed, but when it is, Old Alex is there. Look at the way he projected Shields, and then jerked him after he had battered Teacher's morale to the last ebb.
The Railsplitters have a fairly easy time now until they meet Hiwassee at Harrogate on November 21. Their next game is with T.P.I. at Cookeville.
