HIGHLANDERS SMOTHER L.M.U. TEAM

Visitors Completely Outclassed Lighter Airedales.

Displaying a superior brand of
football, with a much better team than played here in 1925 the Highlanders of
Maryville defeated L.M.U. Saturday in a game lacking thrills and until the last
quarter little other than straight football, end runs and off tackle plays. The
final score was 55 to 0. The score, unlike most games, tells the tale. It was
the case of a superior team playing an inferior one, a team with plenty of
letter men playing a team that had only two letter men from the team that made
history last year when they held the Highlanders to a 14 to 7 count on the same
field. It is a feat that few coaches accomplish, building a winning team in one
season.
Soon after the first kickoff a drive was started down
the field that ended in a touchdown. The whole game, if repeated would be a
repetition of this first sentence, except in two or three instances when some
flashes of real football were displayed by the Airedales. They could not make a
sustained drive for the goal for any length of time. The drive and weight of the
Highlanders broke p the plays and threw them for losses. At no time were they in
scoring distance. A few passes were made good for short gains. A few end runs
resulted in some yardage, some off tackle plays in which Hobbs or Dofflemyer
carried the ball brought the Airedales a little closer to the goal but at no
time was the Maryville goal threatened.
Maryville in the last quarter threw some of the finest
passes ever seen here. Two that were good for thirty-five yards each were
uncorked by McCall and safely snatched by Cartwright and Hunt.
Maryville made twenty-five first downs from scrimmage. L.M.U.
was only able to make four, two of these came as a result of penalties.
Nard Stars
The Lincoln Memorial team was not
without its stars however. Nard, playing end, was the equal of any of the
Maryville team. He was the bright spot on the Airedale team. He went around end
and brought down a Maryville back time after time before he [the back] could get
underway. His playing was the most stellar of the day. Dofflemyer and Hobbs were
good on offensive plays.
For Maryville, McCall, Cartwright, Byrd and Clemens
were the outstanding luminaries.
Officials were Johnson, referee; Adams, umpire; and
Lowe, head linesman. Lincoln Memorial will play Tusculum at Harrogate in the
next game October 30.
