AIREDALES LOSE TO NORMALITES
19-26
--------------------------------------
"Mule" Brown and "Tex" Turner Outstanding
Stars for Airedales
Sunday, November 4, at eight o'clock
Coach "Pop" Garrett and his 16 moleskin "pups" departed for
Johnson City to meet Big Jim Lick's Teachers.
The game was played in a sea of mud, which put the fast
L.M.U. backfield at a disadvantage. Capt. Turner was lucky in the toss-up and
chose to receive. On four line bucks Airedales made first down, a forward pass
was completed for twenty five yards putting ball on Normal's forty-yard line on
the next play "Fatty" Hale ran forty yards for a touchdown on a
fumble. Normal kicked off to L.M.U. and the two teams see-sawed back and forth
across field. Both teams were well-matched in line. The ball was run out of
bounds. Wilson, laid out and received pass, made long run for touchdown. Quarter
ended, L.M.U. 13, Normal 0.
In the second quarter, Normal scored first touchdown on
a series of end runs and forward passes, Choate and Cobble were outstanding
stars in this quarter, Cobble making touchdown. Half ended, L.M.U. 13, Normal 7.
During third quarter, Normal tied the score, again
using their effective forward pass, Choate to Lunsford. Hale again ran 50 yards
for a touchdown. End third quarter, L.M.U. 19, Normal 13.
Normal opened fourth quarter with a forward pass, which
put the ball within striking distance of the goal, it was carried over on line
bucks. Score, L.M.U. 19, Normal 20. This narrow margin was not enough for
Normal, and another touchdown was scored by them. Final score, L.M.U. 19, Normal
26.
The Airedales sustained their reputation of clean
sportsmanship by putting up a clean, game fight although defeated. Capt. Turner
and Brown were stonewalls on the defense, neither man missed a tackle throughout
the game.
