LMU vs. Murphy 11-10-25

Article from The Blue and Gray, November 15, 1923 edition.

L.M.U. 33; MURPHY 0

---------------------

AIREDALES VICTORIOUS

Things ran riot on the campus Saturday afternoon and evening after the final whistle blew and Murphy College was defeated by the L.M.U. grid artists 33-0. It was L.M.U.'s first victory and nothing could restrain the spirit of the students.
Everyone was expecting victory. At the pep meeting and bonfire on Friday night the spirit of fight dominated all.
At 3:00 o'clock the game began. Turner, L.M.U.'s brilliant quarter took the kickoff and returned the ball to the 50-yard line. Then began a fight, the L.M.U. line, heavier than their opponents, plunging through the Murphy line for gains. By straight football the Airedales advanced the ball to within a few yards of the goal and on a pass to Wilson scored their first touchdown in the first few minutes of play.
The Murphy lads put up a clean, hard fight from beginning to end.
L.M.U.'s goal was never really in danger but once during the game, and that in the third quarter when Murphy tore loose for a long run around right end to L.M.U.'s thirty yard line to be downed by Turner.
Turner, the Airedale quarter was the outstanding star of the game. His broken field running, line plunging, zig-zagging, play rolled up many yards for his team.
The scrubs came in for their part of the glory. When Coach Garrett saw the strength of our opponent he began to run in the second string men and used most of them during the game.
This game marks the turning point in L.M.U.'s football season for '23 and everyone is confident of victory in the two other games.

L.M.U. Wins From Murphy,
33 To 0
-----------------------

BY MYRTLE THOMPSON

Harrogate, Nov. 13.--Lincoln Memorial University Airedales outplayed the light team from Murphy College on L. M. U. grid Monday [Game was actually played on Saturday] and won their first game this season by a score of 33-0.
The team from Sevierville put up a clean hard fight to the last minute.
     L. M. U.'s goal was never in danger except in the third quarter when Murphy tore loose for a long gain to L. M. U.'s thirty yard line. The Lincoln lads scored their first touchdown in the first few minutes of play, taking ball on the twenty yard line and advancing it by a series of line plays down the field to striking distance and scoring on a pass.
Turner, the Airedale quarter, was the outstanding star of the game. His broken field running and line plunging rolled up many yards for his team, Garrett, Wilson and Pettigrew also played a stellar game.
Coach Garrett used practically all the second string men during the game.
