L.M.U. Airedales Lose to More Experienced Highlanders
--------------------------------------
L.M.U. went down in defeat before the
fast and experienced Highlanders of Maryville College, Friday October 26 at
Maryville.
Although the Airedales put up a clean hard fight, and
bitterly contested every inch of ground gained by the Highlanders, the heavier
team and more consistent team work counted for long gains through our lighter
and less experienced line.
At times L.M.U. showed real football ability on offense
and defense. In the third quarter the Airedales took the ball on their 10 yard
line and advanced it by an assortment of plays to Maryville's ten yard line.
Here we lost the ball by an unsuccessful drop kick, the ball going over.
Captain Turner again distinguished himself by his
broken field running and terrific line plunges, breaking through the
Highlanders' line upon several occasions for long gains.
The brilliant work of the L.M.U. back field as a whole
was a feature of the game.
Early in the quarter, Albright, the Airedales'
fullback, fighting gamely, was injured in the foot and a substitute was
necessary. Too much cannot be said of Albright's excellent work in the game both
as a defensive and offensive man.
The fighting spirit of the L.M.U. line can be praised
very much. Every line man fought like his namesake, the Airedale.
In the last half, facing great odds and sure defeat,
they came back stronger and fought like demons, stronger than ever.
Maryville scored in the first few minutes of play,
kicking off to L.M.U., gaining the football on a fumble and bucking it across
L.M.U.'s goal.
Maryville has one of the strongest teams in Tennessee.
Only a few days ago they they held the Vols of U.T. to a 14-14 tie. [Oct. 6 at
U.T.] They also played the University of Kentucky to a close game. [Oct. 20 in
Lexington]
A crowd of about sixty L.M.U. boosters accompanied the
team, or went in cars to Maryville to witness the game and offered considerable
encouragement from the side lines.
It was a great game and the score does not tell the
story of the fine fight our lads put up.
