L.M.U. Braves Hold Cumberland College to Close Score In First Game

Playing a brand of football pleasing to Coach and students, the L.M.U. Braves were defeated Saturday in their first game of the season. No one finds fault with the team for losing. They are a great team and everyone who sees them in action predicts a different outcome of the next fracas.
That L.M.U. outclassed Cumberland in the second half of the game, was clearly seen by everyone and was admitted by Coach Jackson of Cumberland after the contest.
A large crowd saw the game, the first at L.M.U. and were clearly surprised at the wonderful showing made by the team.
Perhaps no one was more surprised than the Cumberland team, whom, it seems, had expected an easy defeat of the Braves.
L.M.U. although out fought, put up a brave fight and in the final minutes of play pushed their opponents back nearly to the goal line.
The outstanding stars of the game were Turner, Albright and Brown, [seen at left in picture -- from left to right -- Niles Brown, Tex Turner and Philip Albright at top -- Wade Garrett at the bottom] of the backfield and Hudson of the line. Turner, in the first quarter broke through the line and ran sixty yards for a touchdown.
"Supersix" Hudson, on a fake run, ran forty yards for a touchdown.
The backfield men were up to standard, playing the game to the letter and never failed to gain when called upon.
As a general, Captain Turner can be depended upon to bringing [sic] home the bacon in future games, when his men have become more experienced.
The game was called at 3:38. L.M.U. kicks off -- Turner kicks. Cumberland receives ball on 20 yard line and brings it to the 40 yard line; 1st down, 10 to go; Cumberland makes 1st down, 10 to go; 2nd down, no gain; 3rd down, 3 to go; 4th down, 1 yard to go. LMU Holds Cumberland To 18 to 13 Score
--------------------------------------

Special to The Knoxville Sentinel

HARROGATE, Oct. 15.--Although defeated by Cumberland college to the tune of 18 to 13, the Lincoln Memorial University Braves put up a stiff fight and showed that they were in line for some real games this season. This is the first time in the history of the university that it has had a football team and the first game against a strong eleven  has served to show the team its weak places.
Cumberland scored on an end run in the middle of the first quarter, but did not kick goal. L. M. U. received the ball in the second quarter and Turner made a spectacular run of 60 yards for a touchdown, but failed to kick goal.
Cumberland received the ball on a fumble in the middle of the second quarter and made a touchdown, but again failed to kick goal. Cumberland scored again in the third quarter, and a third time failed at goal.
In the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, Hudson made a touchdown for L. M. U. and kicked goal. The final score stood 18 to 13.
